Like I said before my intent is not to make anyone looks bad...

Like I said before my intent is not to make anyone looks bad or contradict what has been said. On the contrary, the contrary I applaud Agent-X for the effort made here. By the same token, the subject is important enough to ask for clarification.

The Russians then and US were not friends, in fact they were in a cold war in 1959.
Sputnik educational reform was not a direct result of an educational reform in America.

Social changes, as the result of America's dissatisfaction with the Union coupled with only a decade after the world war II brought discontentment as promises to the GI did not exactly fit the bill. The Black social movement with the feminist uprising HELP the Sputnik ideology.

Did Sputnik education reform work?

We all know the answer to that one.
Reasons: Teachers, parents, private organizations were not too certain about ALL students learning math and sciences.

They feel threatened.

They even tried to make math and sciences mass-friendly to pacify the masses.

It did not work because mainly people did not take the reform too seriously and were afraid of the outcome.

Here again social engineering is powerless if key players don't want it to happen.

In a country like the United States were imply social class is so powerful, especially when it related to gender and race, what makes you think a reform ideology from outside of the United States would work?

Here in US, we don't talk about social class, we just act it and the control of the classes are restrictive and any movement against them is prohibitive.

Here today in America, there are about 90 million people who are barely functionally literate.

Do you think it is by accident?

Today's public high schools in America has two separate group of students:Those that are college bound and the others who are penitentiary bound.

The college bound ones take pre-college courses and the other group just do time in high schools that are being used as a warehouse for those students, the latter are the forgotten ones."Special Education" was then and still is today a politically charged subject in the education system.

Beware of anyone who wants to get your child to a special ed program.

Have your child tested and re-tested by independent specialist before you makeup your mind.
The practical information that I can give to young Haitian-Americans is that if you are college bound make sure that you major in something with a future like health care, business, computer science to name a few. Do your homework with the Bureau of Statistics, find out where the jobs will be 10-15 years from now, otherwise you will end up in debt with your student loans, unable to buy a house or a car. You credit status will be over. Besides, a college education is not always the answer if a good job is what you have in mind. On the other hand if you are seeking knowledge for it own sake, then a college education, especially Liberal Arts, is an invaluable investment even if you become eternally poor financially.
