Canadian premieres of 'Haiti: Where Did The Money Go?'

According to rabble-ca on May 9, 2012 article by Roger Annis, The Canadian premiere of director Michele Mitchell's 60-minute documentary film 'Haiti: Where Did the Money Go?' will take place in Summerside and Charlottetown PEI on Monday, May 14. She will take the film to four other centers in the Maritime provinces, wrapping up in Halifax on May 18. Her tour is sponsored by a large number of organizations in the region concerned with social and international development, including the Cooper Institute in Charlottetown.

'Haiti: Where Did The Money Go?' was filmed in late 2011 and examines the conditions of survivors of the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

Michele Mitchell and her 'Film At 11' crew head into the desperate camps still populated by hundreds of thousands and ask, "Why are so many people still here?

Where are the funds that were supposed to provide temporary and permanent shelter?"

The filmmakers interview a variety of directors and activists, Haitian and international, in the vast relief effort.

As Americans, they focus a lot of their attention on the performance of the American Red Cross.

It received donations in excess of $400 million for earthquake relief.

Mitchell brings a unique viewpoint to her film. She traveled to Haiti one year after the earthquake and produced documentary footage at that time. The new film looks at Haiti from that vantage point, among others.

She begins by noting how little appeared to have changed between late 2010 and late 2011.

The observations in Mitchell's film are, regretably, confirmed by many other observers.

A recent report by a delegation of members of the European Parliament drew particularly harsh conclusions, notably over the performance of the government that was elected in the foreign-funded and sponsored, two-round presidential election of November 2010/March 2011. The report notes that the government of Michel Martelly has failed to even establish a ministry of housing.
