Patrick Gaspard's father, an attorney from Haiti, moved his family time around the time when prime minister Patrice Lumumba made an appeal to intellectuals around the world from African descent to relocate to the DRC after their independence.

Gaspard moved with his parents to the United States, New York City to be exact, when he was three years old following the death of Lumumba in 1961.

Gaspard started was involved in U.S. politics way before Obama ran for the presidency. Patrick Gaspard helpped in the campaign of Jesse Jackson when he was candidate for president. He also helped David Dinkins become mayor of New York City.
