MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay -- Uruguay's president has apologized to Haiti for alleged sex abuse involving his country's peacekeepers in the Caribbean nation.

Uruguayan leader Jose Mujica sent a letter late Tuesday asking forgiveness from Haitian President Michel Martelly and what he called the "beloved and heroic people of Haiti" for what he described as the criminal and embarrassing conduct of a few Uruguayans.

Mujica said he personally feels ashamed for his countrymen and offered his apology on behalf of Uruguay's armed forces.

Mujica promised a complete investigation and said those responsible will receive the maximum penalties.
