USA starts community police program in Haiti

Haiti Nouvelle - November 23 2013, 7:24 AM

The US State Department has begun a policing program in Haiti that takes officers out of their cars and puts them in the streets.

Stuart Smith of the US Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs says the community-policing program seeks to build trust between Haitian police officers and the neighborhoods they patrol.

Officers hope residents will share information about crime and other matters.

The program began two months ago. So far, police officers have visited more than a dozen schools and Haitian-American officers from the New York Police Department have accompanied them.

Many people in Haiti don't trust the national police force and are reluctant to share information.
