Anti-Government Protest in Haiti Turns Violent

An anti-government protest in Haiti has turned violent with police firing tear gas and counter demonstrators throwing stones.

People in civilian clothes have fired shots into the air.

The march in the Haitian capital began peacefully Thursday morning as the crowd grew to about 3,000 people and passed through poor neighborhoods.

Protesters were attacked by people who threw rocks from rooftops and alleyways.

The demonstrators then made a rare trip to the hillside district of Petionville, where many shops and restaurants cater to wealthy Haitians.

Sporadic demonstrations have taken place in Port-au-Prince in recent weeks.

The crowds have called for President Michel Martelly's resignation, saying his government isn't doing enough to improve living conditions.
