I would like to add to your post that the very first mass exodus was at the eve of Haitian War of independence when Whites, Mulattoes and Blacks left the plantations because they were afraid for Haiti's future and their's. Most of them moved to Philadelphia, Louisiana, Virginia.

Jean Baptiste Point Du Sable was among the truly first generation of Haitian Diaspora.
