The First Real Election In Haiti... Pretty Bold Statement!

I was talking to a friend of mine earlier today and my friend said journalists are calling this years election the first real election in Haiti in decades. Do you feel the same way?

My friend is says that Haiti is almost like a democratic dictatorship where power is handed down to someone else like an old pair of shoes.

"You always know who is GOING to win even before the SELECTION is over," my friend says. "Although this year's election is a short one, there is no clear indication who will win."

And when I asked my friend: "Dont you think the election period is too short?"

My friend replied:

"It's perfect... otherwise the candidate with the most money would win!"

I have to be honest. so far I don't feel the election... at least not from my vantage point... or perhaps it is because I was so glued to CNN, for the first time in my life, during the Obama campaign...

I think I am trying to compare apples to oranges.

How do you feel about this year elections in Haiti?

There has never been a presidential election in Haiti where the label of "First Real Election In Haiti" can frankly apply including the current presidential election, nor will there be one in the near future worth of that label.

The facts speak for themselves.

There are two categories of presidential candidates in the 2010 Haiti presidential elections.

Remember that in Germany, Hitler was elected to office, but the nation was not what we would call democratic and freedom for the Jews and some other sub-groups of that society.

In USA until the Civil Rights movement, Negroes were second class citizens.

Ditto in South Africa until Apartheid was eliminated.

By the standards of USA Canada Europe, no, the election process in Haiti is a sham.

However, when comparing Haiti election system with the democratic elections in the old Soviet Union, modern China, Iran, and some other places we could name, Haiti elections are reasonable.

At least the people do not get shot for voting for the wrong candidate ...

they get shot for other

Obviously this is a false statement, i am not agree with it, i hate the Aristide government more than any government that ever take place that i am aware of my knowlegde, i hate it more than this preval actual government but honestly if i have to mention a democatic election, i would say, the first election that put Aristide to power first time was a real democratic one.

but this one?

nahhhh, it will not be, i don't beleive in it, but i am agrre with one thing from your friend comment, Woodring, I am not too happy with the short periode myself, but he is danm right, if it gets longer, the candida with the most money or at least the one who have money and want to invest in buying voters and all kind of other shit would win, like, (ou konnen tankou moune ki al vote pou haran sort ak clairin), gin anpil moune haiti ki vote yo pa konnen pou ki sa yo vote. If this years election will produce a carbon copy of francois Duvalier and his tonton macoute then We will consider the elections a success.

Even If It Is a female candidate that wins, If she would be a copy of Francois Papa doc Duvalier and can produce and exact copy of his tonton macoute.then the elections would have been a success.

If not, the kidnapping, rape, theft, and murder will continue the gangs will continue the same mess all over again.when I was down in haiti In march and april of 1981
And met and married my perfect femme de carrefour marie kettely haiti te sweet (dous) and that was during the rein of jean claude not his papa Francois Duvalier.can you imagine how sweet haiti was doing Francois Duvalier.
