Dominicans Have More French Speakers Than Haiti

Sabine - December 14 2010, 5:12 PM

I was in a restaurant in Santiago De Los Caballeros in Dominican Republic and I was surprised to see those French Dominican speakers.

I heard that in Dominican Republic that they have almost 40% of Dominican French speakers and they are always chosen to lead the Dominican diplomatic missions in Haiti.

In another town called Rodriguez I heard they have 30% of French speakers whereas in Haiti we have only 15% Haitian french speakers, what a shame?

When I ask them if french could become an official language in their country they all say no and they continue to say that Dominicans need to do more at least to bring their 40% rate to 60 or 70% and they believe that the Dominican elites will never opt for such a choice.

They are happy with the rate of 40% French speakers in Dominican Republic and they believe that they can send us some french teachers to teach Haitians french.

All throughout Dominican Republic I have noticed a lot of old french castles and french farmers too. The French central embassy in Dominican Republic has a lot of french schools and institutes under its control there whereas in Haiti they may have only one or two. They said if the Haitian president wants french teachers they will send us a lot of french teachers to help after the earthquake.

Should French continue to be an official language in Haiti?

I do not think so after all those postings that I have read on this blog. I always believe that Haiti is not a french country although the Haitian bourgeoisie wants it to be, but when listening to Chirac's political declarations during the last referendum vote in Guadeloupe and Martinique I am convinced that France does not like us and Haiti is not and will never be a french country.

We need to be ourselves and I welcome all ideas to make Creole the only official language of Haiti in the days ahead...

The lost french Haitian citizens on this blog will fight me to death, but I am telling them that Haiti will rebuild and Creole will be the only official language of Haiti.
