Peacekeeping Missions to Haiti

As part of a broader multinational force, Jamaica is prepared to deploy 200 security personnel to aid in addressing the ongoing security and humanitarian crisis in Haiti. Jamaica's Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, made the announcement Friday.

This move comes in solidarity with other nations, including Kenya and The Bahamas, which have also pledged their support to the cause.

Kenya, taking a leadership role, has announced its readiness to send 1000 police officers to assist Haitian law enforcement.

"At the request of Friends of Haiti Group of Nations, Kenya has accepted to positively consider leading a Multi-National Force to Haiti." This is what Dr Alfred N. Mutua, cabinet secretary (Minister) of foreign and diaspora Affairs of the Republic of Kenya, posted on his Twitter page on 29 July 2023.

So Kenya did not volunteer to "deploy a contingent of 1,000 police officers to help train and assist Haitian police restore normalcy in the country and protect strategic installations," like minister Alfred Mutua so eloquently puts it. Kenya was asked to take the lead.

I am laughing as I write this. I don't know why. The Bahamas has pledged its commitment to the multinational peacekeeing force aimed at restoring security and stability in Haiti. Bahamas joins Kenya's decision to assume leadership of the multinational force and deploy 1000 police to Haiti.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of The Bahamas recently announced its decision to contribute 150 individuals to support the initiative, pending authorization by the United Nations Security Council.

The U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince Haiti and Secretary of State Antony Blinken commend the Government of Kenya for its leadership role in responding to Haiti's plea for assistance. They call on Haitian stakeholders to unite in restoring democratic order and stability to the nation.

For some time now the US and Canada have been looking for someone to take the lead in some form of peacekeeping intervention in Haiti. They surely don't want to take the blame when things go wrong. I guess they found one.

On Sunday, 30 July 2023, Haitian foreign minister Jean Victor Geneus conveyed his profound gratitude on behalf of Haiti, he really means his government, following Kenya's announcement of its intention to lead an international force and deploy 1,000 police officers to assist Haiti.
