Peter,
Opposition is not a negative in a democracy.

The president is not a dictator and needs to be challenged if a portion of the population don't agree with his policies.

What Martelly has to do, is acknowledge there concerns, compromise where possible and respectfully agree to disagree on issues they don't see eye to eye.

Abuse of power is one of the very reasons Haiti has not moved forward in the past.
