Quisqueya and Haiti

Cosme Perez - October 2 2013, 5:40 PM

There is a problem that should be resolved between the two countries sharing one island.

The name of the island is the main problem.

If originally Haiti was fighting to take over the entire island since General Toussaint Louverture came up with the Constitution of Saint Domingue and later, Jean P Dessalines declared the independence of Haiti, it had all the rights to name the island also Haiti.

But it didn't work! By naming the island "Saint Domingue" or "Santo Domingo", Haiti will not lose anything and its historical pride won't be hurt a bit, but will solve a long time impasse with regards to the name of her neighboring country, which has failed to adopt a proper name for its nation and only uses the identity derived from the name they have for the island "Dominican Republic".

Her forefather gave the name of Quisqueya, but intellectuals have not understood Duarte's project for the nation.
