"It really hurts me to see the people of the North (les gents du Nord) denigrate the statue of our Heroes of independence," Senate president Joseph Lambert said. "I used to hear the people of the North talk about the ideals of Christophe but today they have soiled that ideal."

"I wanted to go celebrate Vertières on 18 November but I don't have the courage to see the outrage they have done to this monument at Vertières," Senator Lambert said.

"When a man goes to Vertières and you lower the flag on the faces of these heroes who gave us our independence and allow us not to be talking about the first black republic in the world. To be talking about Christophe, to be talking about the Citadelle, the people of the North should be ashamed after that happened."

By what happened, he is talking about Moise Jean Charles and his supporters who went to Heroes of independence monument Vertières Saturday, lowered the Haitian flag and raised their own blue and red flag.
