Haitian Senators whose terms expire January 2020 are not willing to depart without a fight

Some of the Haitian Senators whose term will expire on the second Monday of January, 2020, are not willing leave the Senate without a fight. They want to stay in power for six full years!

According to the Haitian Constitution. the term of 10 Senators, or one third of the Senate will expire on the second Monday of January 2020 but these senators who were elected in a late election claim they want their six-year mandate respected.

Senator Jacques Sauveur Jean who did not exactly say he support a prolongation made it clear he wants the laws of the land to be applied in this case.

"Are we going based on the electoral law or the constitution," Senator Jacques Sauveur Jean said. "Me, I read it in the Constitution: A Senator is elected for 6 years."

'If the same constitution says every two years, one third of the Senate, then we have to respect the dates in which elections are to be held," Senator Jacques Sauveur Jean said

Senator Willot Joseph, on other hand, spoke about the prolongation of the the senators Mandate as the condition for the ratification of the approval of Prime Minister Fritz William Michel's general policy statement.
