US Lawmakers threaten to cut aid to Haiti over delayed elections

Lawmakers put Haiti on notice Wednesday that hundreds of millions of dollars in U.S. aid could be in jeopardy if the country fails to hold elections.

Haiti is the biggest recipient of U.S. aid in the Western Hemisphere. Lawmakers of both parties are increasingly worried about President Michel Martelly's democratic credentials and used a House hearing on US aid to send him a clear message.

"Without elections, the president may end up governing by decree," House Foreign Affairs chairman Ed Royce (R-Calif.) said in his opening remarks. "I believe the Haitian people deserve better. I know American taxpayers deserve better. If aid is to continue, we need a viable partner in development and democracy."
